If your Shopify store is unavailable, paused, or closed

Why is my Shopify store unavailable or frozen?

Messages such as “This store is unavailable” or “Store is frozen” usually indicate an issue with your plan, billing, domain, theme, or an account review.

Review the following factors to identify why your store is unavailable:

  1. Billing or plan status

In your Shopify account, go to the Settings page, then open Billing to check for unpaid invoices. Then open Plan to confirm that your store is active.

Resolving the invoice or reactivating the plan often restores your storefront.

  2. Domain issue

Open your .myshopify.com URL. If it works, the store is online and the issue is your domain/DNS. Check Settings → Domains for connection or SSL warnings.

  3. Theme, app, or code change

In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then open Themes. Preview a backup theme.

If the backup works, the issue is likely caused by your current theme or a recent app or code change.

  4. Shopify account or security hold

Check your email and your Shopify admin for verification/security messages. If you see a banner or request, follow it to restore access.

If none of these explain it, contact Shopify Support with the exact error message and your store URL so they can confirm whether the store is frozen, under review, or blocked for billing.

Do I have to refund customers if my store closes?

If your store closes, refunds depend on the status of each order, not on whether the store itself is still open:

  • Paid and delivered: If the order was already completed and delivered to the customer, you typically do not need to issue a refund, even if the store later closed.
  • Paid but not fulfilled: If the order was paid but not yet delivered, you should either fulfill the order or issue a refund to the customer.

While your store is still active, you can refund from Orders, by opening the order and clicking Refund.

If the store is already closed and you can’t access the admin, you may need to reactivate the store (even temporarily) or process the refund through your payment provider using the original transaction.

FAQ

What happens to my customers' orders if I close my store?

You do not need to refund customers for orders that were paid and delivered.

You should refund any orders that were paid but not delivered when you closed your store.

If Shopify terminates my account, can my customers get a refund?

If your Shopify account is terminated, for example, due to a policy issue or store closure, Shopify remains the platform, not the seller, so it does not issue refunds on your behalf.

However, customers may request a refund from you or file a chargeback with their card issuer or payment provider.

In certain risk or compliance situations, Shopify Payments may issue refunds using held funds. This process is handled by Shopify and can’t be controlled from your account.
