Support of ZUGFeRD and Factur-X e-invoices for Shopify stores in Germany and France
The year 2025 marks a significant milestone for e-invoicing in both Germany and France, with new regulations coming into effect that will standardize electronic invoicing for B2B sales.
Sufio is gearing up to support these changes and ensure that Shopify stores in these regions can comply with the new requirements seamlessly.
New e-invoicing regulations in Germany and France
Let’s begin by introducing the new e-invoicing regulations implemented in these two countries.
Germany
Starting January 1, 2025, e-invoicing using the ZUGFeRD standard will become the norm for B2B sales in Germany.
While suppliers can still issue paper invoices or invoices in unstructured formats with the buyer's consent, the official recommendation is to transition to e-invoices to streamline processes and enhance efficiency.
Starting January 1, 2027, companies with a previous year’s turnover of over €800,000 will no longer be permitted to issue invoices in unstructured electronic format. Beginning January 1, 2028, this obligation will apply to all remaining companies.
France
In France, a pilot program for B2B e-invoicing using the Factur-X standard will commence in 2025.
The mandatory adoption of e-invoicing for French businesses is expected to roll out in phases, with the first phase starting on September 1, 2026 or September 1, 2027—depending on the size of the company.
Support for e-invoices in Sufio
Beginning January 1, 2025, Sufio will include structured invoice data in all invoices and credit notes created for merchants based in Germany and France.
This update will enable Shopify stores using Sufio for their invoicing to effortlessly comply with the new e-invoicing regulations.
The structured invoice data will be included in both invoices automatically created from orders in Shopify stores as well as those manually created in the Sufio app.
Similarly, the same structured data will be added to credit notes, whether they are automatically generated from refunds and returns in the online store or manually created within the app.
How do we handle different e-invoicing formats?
For German Shopify stores, the invoice data will be generated in the ZUGFeRD format as specified by the German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
For French Shopify stores, the invoice data will be generated in the Factur-X format as specified by the French Tax Authority (DGFIP).
These new e-invoicing standards in both countries combine human-readable PDF documents with attached machine-readable XML files containing all invoice data. This dual format ensures both easy readability for humans and efficient, automated processing by computer systems.
Note
Support for ZUGFeRD and Factur-X formats in Sufio is currently in public beta and available for all German and French users. We value your feedback—please contact our support team with any questions or suggestions.
