Shopify Font Trends 2026: The Most Popular Fonts Used by Over 2 Million Stores
Typography is one of the most powerful tools in a brand's arsenal. The right font can communicate personality, build trust, and make a store instantly recognizable. The wrong one can do the opposite.
To find out what Shopify merchants are actually choosing, we analyzed the fonts used by over 2 million active Shopify stores. Here's what we found.
Free vs. paid fonts
When it comes to font budgets, free fonts dominate. Our research found that 70.5% of Shopify stores use a free font as their primary storefront font, while 29.5% opt for paid options.

Free fonts
Free fonts are the go-to choice for most Shopify merchants, and for good reason. Google Fonts offers the largest and most accessible library of free fonts, with hundreds of high-quality options that work well across all screen sizes and devices. Popular choices like Assistant and Poppins are proof that free doesn't mean generic.
Paid fonts
Paid fonts require a license from the foundry that created them. Companies like Monotype and Adobe Fonts are among the most prominent distributors. Fonts like Helvetica, Futura, and Avenir are staples of paid typography and are widely used by established brands that want a distinctive, polished look.
Shopify's agreement with Monotype gives merchants access to thousands of premium fonts for use on their storefronts at no additional licensing cost. It's worth noting, however, that this agreement covers storefront use only and does not extend to other applications like product packaging or invoices.
Popular font categories
Fonts are grouped into categories based on their design characteristics and historical origins.
At the broadest level, the distinction is between serif fonts (which have small decorative strokes at the ends of letterforms) and sans-serif fonts (which don't).
Within those two groups, there are several subcategories, each with its own personality and use cases.
Here's how font categories break down across Shopify stores.

Geometric sans (37.8% of stores)
Geometric sans fonts are built on simple, circular shapes and consistent line weights. They give brands a clean, modern, and approachable look.
Futura, Avenir, and Montserrat are among the most popular examples. This is the most widely used font category on Shopify.
Humanist sans (34.3% of stores)
Humanist sans fonts are designed with legibility in mind. They draw on the organic qualities of handwriting, featuring open letterforms and subtle variation in stroke width.
Gill Sans, Myriad, and Frutiger are well-known examples. These fonts strike a balance between approachability and sophistication.
Grotesque sans (19.3% of stores)
Grotesque sans fonts have a more mechanical, utilitarian character. They feature sharp curves, uniform spacing, and a no-nonsense aesthetic.
Helvetica, Univers, and Roboto are the most recognizable names in this category. They're a strong choice for brands that want a bold, neutral look.
Old style serif (3.4% of stores)
Old style serifs draw inspiration from calligraphy and early printing. They're characterized by organic letterforms and a contrast between thick and thin strokes.
Garamond and Bembo are classic examples. These fonts work well for brands aiming for a sophisticated, timeless feel.
Transitional serif (2.7% of stores)
Transitional serifs sit between old style and modern serifs. They feature more geometric construction and higher contrast between thick and thin strokes, giving them a formal, trustworthy appearance. Times New Roman and Baskerville are the most familiar examples.
Monospaced (1.06% of stores)
Monospaced fonts assign equal width to every character, a trait inherited from typewriters and early computer terminals. They convey precision and technicality.
Courier and Lucida Console are common choices. These fonts suit brands with a technical or retro identity.
Slab serif (0.96% of stores)
Slab serifs are defined by their thick, blocklike serifs. They're bold and sturdy, often used to make a statement or evoke a vintage aesthetic. Rockwell and Museo Slab are popular picks in this category.
Didone serif (0.45% of stores)
Didone fonts are known for their dramatic contrast between thick and thin strokes. They're a popular choice in high-end fashion, beauty, and publishing.
Bodoni and Didot are the defining examples. Because of their fine details, they work best at larger sizes.
Most popular fonts on Shopify
Across over 2 million stores, a handful of fonts have risen to the top. Here are the eight most popular primary fonts used by Shopify merchants.

1. Assistant (20.5% of stores)
Assistant is the most widely used font on Shopify by a significant margin. It's a free humanist sans-serif font available on Google Fonts, and its popularity is closely tied to Shopify's Dawn theme, the platform's most popular theme.
The Dawn theme is used by approximately 22% of all Shopify stores, and 74% of those stores keep Assistant as the default font. Clean, readable, and versatile, it works well across all types of stores.
2. Poppins (6.6% of stores)
Poppins is a free geometric sans-serif font from Google Fonts. Its balanced proportions and wide range of weights make it exceptionally versatile, equally at home in a logo, a headline, or body text. It's a reliable choice for stores that want a modern, friendly look.
3. Helvetica (5.7% of stores)
Helvetica is the most popular paid font on Shopify. A grotesque sans-serif designed in Switzerland in 1957, it has become one of the most recognized typefaces in the world. Its clean, neutral lines make it a go-to for brands that want to project professionalism and confidence.
4. Montserrat (5.4% of stores)
Montserrat is a free geometric sans-serif font inspired by the urban typography of Buenos Aires. It has strong, contemporary lines that make it particularly effective for headlines and brand names. It's one of the most downloaded fonts on Google Fonts for good reason.
5. Harmonia Sans (4.0% of stores)
Harmonia Sans is a paid geometric sans-serif from Monotype. Available in five weights, it was designed to balance warmth and precision. It's a strong choice for brands that want to communicate reliability without sacrificing personality.
6. Inter (3.9% of stores)
Inter was designed specifically for screen readability. This free grotesque sans-serif font features tall lowercase letters and wide spacing, making it exceptionally clear on digital displays. It's a popular choice for stores that prioritize a clean, functional user experience.
7. Futura (3.4% of stores)
Futura is one of the most iconic paid fonts ever designed. Created in 1927, this geometric sans-serif has been used by brands ranging from Volkswagen to Supreme. Its strong geometric shapes and modernist character make it a natural fit for brands with a bold, forward-looking identity.
8. Avenir Next (3.4% of stores)
Avenir Next is a refined update to Adrian Frutiger's original Avenir, released by Linotype in 2004. This paid geometric sans-serif is known for its smooth curves and excellent readability. It's a sophisticated, professional typeface that works well across a wide range of brand contexts.
Typography's role in building a consistent brand for Shopify stores
Choosing a font for your storefront is just the beginning. For a brand to feel cohesive, that same typography needs to carry through every customer touchpoint: advertising, product packaging, email, and documents like invoices.
This is where font licensing becomes an important consideration.
Shopify's agreement with Monotype covers storefront use, but if you're using a paid font like Helvetica or Futura, you may need a separate license to use it on printed materials or invoices.
Failing to check can expose your business to licensing issues down the line.

Sufio, like Shopify, has a licensing agreement with Monotype. This means Sufio users can use any of the 40,000 premium fonts on their invoices, credit notes, and other documents, at no additional cost.
Whether you're using a Monotype font on your storefront or want to explore new options for your documents, Sufio makes it easy to keep your brand consistent from the first page visit to the final invoice.
